Community Involvement
Volunteer Work
Volunteering is important at TROSA, not only as a way for TROSA to give back to the community, but also as an opportunity for TROSA residents to experience the fulfillment of working with and for others. The TROSA therapeutic program builds confidence and self-esteem. Giving to others through volunteering encourages these important characteristics and provides useful training for a future life as a good citizen.
At TROSA, participating in off-campus activities is a privilege offered only to those who have demonstrated good behavior. Through volunteer activities, TROSA residents have the opportunity to experience cultural events they would not otherwise enjoy. In addition, when TROSA residents interact with the greater community they help break down stereotypes about drug addiction and those in recovery.
In the past several years, TROSA has made a significant commitment to major community events such as the Festival for the Eno [River], Bull Durham Blues Festival, CenterFest Arts Festival, La Fiesta del Pueblo, and Light Up Durham, as well as a number of smaller events.

TROSA Ensemble
The TROSA ensemble is a band consisting of 10-15 staff and residents of the program in various stages of recovery. The TROSA ensemble regularly performs at various festivals and events in Durham and surrounding areas. These include the Festival for the Eno [River], CenterFest, United Way benefit events, the Special Olympics, and many more. The ensemble entertains audiences with popular R&B hits from the 1960s and 1970s. Their repertoire includes songs such as: We Are Family, My Girl, Mustang Sally, Some Kind of Wonderful, and others.
