TROSA Moving Adds Two Trucks to Fleet

TROSA Moving recently added two new trucks to its fleet. This was made possible through the generosity of a recent matching grant in 2006. The new trucks helped TROSA Moving retire one old truck, expand its fleet, and improve the quality of vehicles available for its commercial driver training program. The two trucks are used International 4300 24-foot straight trucks.

TROSA Moving provides an opportunity for residents in the program to learn marketable job skills and experience in all areas of residential and commercial moving and storage. TROSA's commercial driver training program helps residents in the program learn how to drive all vehicles from cars and passenger vans to straight trucks and tractor trailers. This month 12 residents are participating in the commercial driver training program and getting ready to drive tractor trailers. Every year, 25-50 residents get their commercial driver’s licenses. Participants in the training program get on-the-job experience working at TROSA Moving, which completed nearly 7,000 local and long-distance moves in 2006.

Commercial driving is an important skill individuals can use to find employment after completing the two-year residential program. TROSA graduates with commercial driving experience have gone on to work for employers such as Storr and City of Durham. Professional truck drivers are in high demand in today’s economy. According to the American Trucking Associations, the United States long-haul, heavy-duty truck transportation industry had a national shortage of 20,000 truck drivers last year, which could increase to 111,000 by 2014.
